Why people pick a caravan carport

  • The height is the whole pointA standard carport is built to clear a car. A van with an air conditioner and a hatch on the roof needs more, and that is the measurement this one is cut around.
  • It has to be long enough tooA van is longer than a car and the drawbar adds more again. Getting the length right is what stops the jockey wheel living out in the weather.
  • Cheaper than the storage yardIt is your driveway, so there is no monthly fee and no drive across town to pick the van up before a trip.

Caravan carport questions

01How high does a caravan carport need to be?

Measure your own van to the highest point, which is usually the air conditioner rather than the roofline, then allow room to drive under without watching the mirror. Send that number and the kit is cut to it, so there is no standard height to work around.

02How long should it be?

Long enough for the van and the drawbar, not just the body. People measure the van, order to that, and end up with the jockey wheel and the gas bottles sitting out in the sun. Measure hitch to bumper.

03Flat roof or gable for a caravan?

Flat is simpler and cheaper to build. A gable pitches up from the middle, so it buys headroom where the van sits without lifting the whole structure and the posts with it.

04Do I need council approval for a taller carport?

Usually yes, and height is one of the things a council looks at closely, along with setbacks and whether it sits forward of the house line. Your kit ships with the engineer-rated plans and span tables the application asks for.

05Will it fit a boat or a tall ute instead?

Yes. It is cut to whatever you measure, so the same structure suits a boat on a trailer, a dual cab with a canopy, or a van you have not bought yet. Send the tallest and longest thing you want it to cover.
